What non-PTA means
PTA status simply describes whether a phone has been registered with Pakistan’s device database (DIRBS) for use on local networks.
- ✓PTA approved — already registered, so it accepts Jazz, Zong, Telenor and Ufone SIMs without any block.
- ✓Non-PTA — not yet registered on a local SIM; it typically works for a limited grace period, after which mobile-network service can be blocked until DIRBS tax is paid.
- ✓Wi-Fi always works — a non-PTA phone still runs apps and connects to Wi-Fi normally; the restriction only affects local cellular SIM service.
- ✓Lower upfront price — non-PTA units are usually cheaper to buy, which is why buyers consider them for higher-end models.
Work out your real cost
The right way to judge a non-PTA phone is to add its purchase price and any DIRBS registration tax together, then compare that total against a PTA approved equivalent. The tax depends on the model — FBR sets it on the phone’s customs value, so it is a fixed rupee amount per model (for example about Rs 35,000 CNIC on a Galaxy A55 and about Rs 165,000 on an iPhone 17 in published 2026 figures) — so check the current DIRBS rate for the exact phone before you buy. Since September 2026 FBR lets individuals pay the sales-tax part in instalments within the financial year, which spreads the cost but does not reduce it. If you mainly use Wi-Fi, or you already understand the grace-period rules, a non-PTA phone can still make sense — just go in with the full picture rather than only the sticker price.
Always verify the IMEI
Before buying any non-PTA phone, dial *#06# to get the IMEI and check its status on the official PTA DIRBS portal, or send the IMEI to 8484. This confirms the exact PTA status and helps you avoid a device that is blocked or reported. On Mehfoz the listed status is shown up front, but verifying the IMEI yourself is always the safest final step before you pay.
Buying safely in Faisalabad
Because non-PTA phones carry an extra consideration, it is worth using Mehfoz’s buyer tools. Where a listing supports it, request an inspection so a trained inspector checks the device and confirms its details before you pay, and use Buy with Protection on eligible deals so your money is safer until you have the phone. Buying from a Verified Seller in Faisalabad adds further confidence, and every listing shows its PTA status clearly so there are no surprises.
