What does PTA approved actually mean?
PTA approval is handled through DIRBS — the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System run by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. Every phone has a unique IMEI number, and DIRBS checks that IMEI against its database. If the device is registered and cleared, it is "PTA approved" and can use any local SIM indefinitely. If it is not, the network will eventually block the SIM slot on that device until the phone is registered and any applicable tax is paid.
- ✓Approved (Compliant) — fully registered, works on Jazz, Zong, Telenor and Ufone with no SIM block.
- ✓Non-compliant / Not approved — will face a SIM block after the grace period unless registered.
- ✓Block status can be checked instantly by texting your IMEI to 8484 or using the official DIRBS portal.
How to check a phone’s IMEI before you buy
Never rely on a seller’s word alone — verify the IMEI yourself. Dial *#06# on the phone to display its IMEI, then confirm that the same number is printed on the box and under Settings. Send that IMEI to 8484 by SMS, or enter it on the PTA DIRBS website, to see the live status. On Mehfoz, approved listings already carry a PTA badge, but a final IMEI check at handover protects you from a swapped or cloned device.
PTA tax: why a “cheaper” non-approved phone can cost more
Non-PTA phones are often priced lower because the registration cost has not been paid. That tax is fixed by FBR per model on its customs value and runs from roughly Rs 35,000 on a mid-range Galaxy A55 to Rs 120,000–190,000 on a current Galaxy S flagship (published 2026 figures, CNIC rate). If you buy a non-approved phone, you either pay that tax to keep it usable on your SIM, or you live with a blocked device. When you compare prices, always add the likely PTA tax to a non-approved phone — an approved device is frequently the better overall deal.
Why PTA status matters for resale
A PTA approved phone is far easier to sell later. Buyers in Faisalabad strongly prefer approved devices because they can use them on any SIM without extra cost or hassle, so approved phones hold their value better and sell faster. A non-approved phone narrows your buyer pool and usually fetches a lower price, even after you have paid the tax. Buying approved today protects your money when you upgrade tomorrow.
Buy approved phones more safely on Mehfoz
Beyond the PTA badge, Mehfoz gives you tools to confirm a device is genuinely what it claims to be. You can request an inspection where a trained inspector verifies the IMEI, confirms the live DIRBS status, and checks the phone’s hardware, then shares a report. For higher-value purchases, Buy with Protection adds a safer payment flow so funds are not released until you are satisfied. Together these reduce the risk of paying for a phone that turns out to be blocked.
