What non-PTA means for an iPhone
PTA status describes whether the iPhone is registered with Pakistan’s device database (DIRBS) for use on a local SIM.
- ✓Non-PTA — not registered on a local SIM; it works for about 60 days after a Pakistani SIM is first used, after which cellular service is blocked until DIRBS tax is paid.
- ✓Wi-Fi always works — iMessage, apps, FaceTime over Wi-Fi and everything else keep working; only local SIM service is affected.
- ✓Lower upfront price — a non-PTA iPhone is usually cheaper to buy, which is why buyers consider it to reach a higher model.
- ✓Higher DIRBS tax — because iPhones are high value, their registration tax is larger than on budget phones, so it matters more to your total cost.
Extra checks that matter on any iPhone
Whatever the PTA status, an iPhone needs its own specific checks before you pay. Confirm the battery health in Settings → Battery, and test that Face ID or Touch ID sets up and unlocks reliably. Make sure True Tone is present, since a missing True Tone can point to a replaced screen. Most importantly, the phone must be fully signed out of the previous owner’s Apple ID with Find My iPhone turned off — an iPhone still locked to iCloud or showing Activation Lock is effectively unusable, so never pay until this is cleared.
Work out your real cost, then verify the IMEI
To judge a non-PTA iPhone fairly, add its price and the current DIRBS tax for that exact model, then compare against a PTA approved equivalent. Before buying, dial *#06# to get the IMEI and check it on the official PTA DIRBS portal, or send it to 8484, to confirm the status and make sure the device is not blocked or reported. On Mehfoz the listed status is shown up front, but verifying the IMEI yourself is always the safest final step.
